What is Home Compostable Packaging?
Home compostable packaging breaks down in a standard domestic compost bin — at ambient temperatures, without specialist infrastructure — within a defined timeframe, typically 90–180 days.
The three terms most people confuse
Biodegradable means it will break down eventually. No timeline. No standard. No verification required. It's a marketing word, not a certification.
Industrially compostable means it breaks down at high temperatures (58–70°C) in a commercial composting facility. Most UK households don't have access to one. If your customers bin it, it goes to landfill.
Home compostable means it breaks down in your garden compost bin at ambient temperatures. Customers can actually compost it. This is the highest standard.
What certification proves
Anyone can print "compostable" on packaging. Certification means an independent laboratory has tested and verified the claim. DIN CERTCO and TÜV Austria (OK Compost Home) are the two leading certifiers in Europe — both require rigorous third-party testing.
Why food businesses should care
The CMA's Green Claims Code requires environmental claims to be accurate, clear, and substantiated. "Home compostable" without a certification number is an unsubstantiated claim — and a compliance risk.
Certified home compostable packaging gives you verified credentials, SUP compliance, and a genuine sustainability story your customers can act on.
Every HOMELINK ECO product is certified home compostable by DIN CERTCO and TÜV Austria. PFAS-free. UK stock.
